THE EVENT, HELD AT THE CENTRE GROUNDS, SERVED AS A FUNDRAISER AND AN OPPORTUNITY TO HIGHLIGHT THE TALENTS AND SKILLS OF JUVENILE WARDS

The Boys Training Centre (BTC) successfully hosted the 2nd edition of BTC Jazz on May 23, 2024, under the theme, “Together We Can.” The event, held at the Centre grounds, served as a fundraiser and an opportunity to highlight the talents and skills of juvenile wards undergoing effective rehabilitation at the BTC.

Jahn MacFarlane, BTC Counselor, and 2023-2024 Event Coordinator, emphasized the importance of the music event at BTC.

“We have a music band sponsored by the Amy Winehouse Foundation, and they have provided us with a tutor for the music program and instruments. We created this event to raise funds to expand that program with piano, guitar, and more. It is also a social event for the wards and staff of the BTC,” explained MacFarlane.

The event featured a stellar lineup of performances, including musical renditions by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Band, BTC Band, Invasion Band, Big People Business Band, and captivating performances by Shirley-Ann Cyril Myers, guitarist Kyle, and other talented artists. The master of ceremonies, Superman a.k.a Pringles, ensured an inspiring and entertaining evening.

Newly appointed Acting Manager of BTC, Leanna Wallace, spoke about the broader impact of the event on the rehabilitation process.

“I think music is a very important avenue for young people to express themselves, especially in this type of institution. I continued with this program because it is an opportunity for the world at large to know that the Boys Training Centre is an avenue for boys to rehabilitate and become better,” stated Wallace.

The funds raised will directly support the expansion of the music program, enabling the acquisition of additional instruments and resources. This will allow more boys to participate, enhancing their rehabilitation experience and providing them with valuable skills.

BTC Jazz 2024 exemplifies the center’s commitment to using music and community engagement as tools for change.
